As of 2021, Marian served as a country expert witness on anti-Roma racism in immigration courts across the United States securing positive results for his clients in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Illinois etc. Also, he provided critical expert testimonies in groundbreaking U.S. cases, including California’s first-ever racial bias ruling under the Racial Justice Act. The case pertained to a Romanian Roma arrested in California, and it was decided in 2024.
Marian’s legal career spans over two decades, beginning with his admission to the Bucharest Bar in 2005. As Executive Director of Romani CRISS (2012–2020), he led multiple landmark human rights cases. His notable victories include the Lingurar v. Romania case at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which was the first to establish racial profiling by police against a racial group in Europe. He also successfully litigated high-profile cases on hate speech (winning three times against the President of Romania) and school segregation, such as the desegregation of School 19 Craiova.
He holds an LL.M. from Columbia University (2010), where he also served as a teaching assistant to renowned civil rights lawyer Prof. Jack Greenberg.
In addition to his litigation successes, Marian has contributed to drafting critical legislative proposals on desegregation and anti-discrimination in Romania. He has worked closely with international bodies such as the Council of Europe, the European Commission, and the OSCE to develop legal standards and has trained judges, police officers, and activists. Marian has authored six books on Roma human rights, further solidifying his reputation as a leading advocate for justice and equality.
